Night Vision vs Thermal: What Should Distributors Stock?

A distributor-level comparison of digital night-vision and thermal product categories — demand shape, price ceilings, compliance load, and channel fit.

What each technology actually does

Digital night vision amplifies faint light and shows detail — faces, signs, tripwires — usually with an IR illuminator for total darkness. Thermal images emitted heat and needs zero light — it finds warm shapes, then vision or zoom can detail them. Both have loyal demand; they are tools for different hours of the same jobs.

Demand and price ceilings

Digital NVG enters at gift-season prices and supports a real performance tier — the head-mounted formats (NVG30/40/50 class) own hands-free work. Thermal commands higher prices with less demand volume, stronger growth, and near-zero price sensitivity in professional channels (patrol, SAR, pest control). Distributors usually add thermal once their NVG demand proves the channel.

The compliance difference

Thermal carries heavier export/import control load in most destinations. That load cuts both ways: it complicates shipping and it protects channel margin from fly-by-night sellers. Plan licensing with your supplier before the first PO, and treat their documentation support as a supplier-selection criterion.

Program logic

Both categories private-label well on our platforms — housing color, decals, boot screens, palettes and kits. Night/thermal programs that pair honest range claims (detection/recognition/identification) with compliant logistics build the only durable kind of advantage in this category: trust.
